Mary-Drawdy1Mary Earle Drawdy, wife of the late Vance B. Drawdy, passed away on January 6, 2015, at her residence. She was 91 years old. Born in Greenville on February 18, 1923, she was the daughter of the late John Kern Earle and Louise Farrell Earle. Mary graduated from Greenville High School, class of 1940. She earned her BA degree in French and Mathematics from Furman University, class of 1944.

After college and during World War II, Mary worked for the Navy Department in Washington, D.C. where her job duties included keeping track of the location of the Navy's fleet of destroyers. After the War, Mary returned to Greenville. She taught briefly in the Greenville County public schools, and she worked for several years as a receptionist for physicians Drs. Stanley and Craig.

Mary was an accomplished photographer, artist, and calligrapher. She studied portrait painting under Robert L. Bruns as well as Janet Fleming Smith. She painted the portraits of a number of family members and friends. Mary also was an accomplished flower gardener and received her landscape critic certification. She was a member of numerous clubs in Greenville including the Greenville Garden Club, the Greenville Women's Club, the Republican Women's Club, the Greenville Historical Society, and Friends of Springwood Cemetery.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Greenville for many years and was a faithful member of the Fidelis Sunday School class.

Surviving are her son, Vance Earle Drawdy (Sarah) and grandson Luke Townes Drawdy of Anderson; sisters, Elizabeth Farnsworth and Margaret Ellison (Clyde); brothers, William Holt Earle (Patricia) and David Farrell Earle; and special friends of the family, Trena Duncan and Margaret Turner. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews whom she loved like her own children and who referred to her affectionately as "Aunt Mamie." She was predeceased by her brother, John K. Earle.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 847 Cleveland St., Greenville, SC 29601, Hospice Compassus,1923 E. Main St, Ste. B, Duncan, SC 29334 or to the charity of your choice. The visitation was held on Monday, January 12, 2015, from 12:15 p.m. until 1:15 p.m. at the Mackey Mortuary, 311 Century Drive, Greenville, SC. The funeral service followed at 1:30 p.m. in the Mackey Mortuary chapel. Burial was in Woodlawn Memorial Park. After the burial, the family gathered at the home of Elizabeth Farnsworth in Greenville.
