Middle-School-Students---DAR-Good

Snow Campaign Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, of Fountain Inn, SC, held its annual Awards Ceremony on Thursday, April 10, 2014. Dot Cooley, Chapter Regent, welcomed everyone. The Pledge to the Flag of the United States of America, the American’s Creed, and the Salute to the Flag of South Carolina were led by Mary Williamson, Flag Committee Chair. The invocation was given by Loretta Woods, Chaplain. Regent Dot Cooley recognized the guests.

The Flag Committee award was presented by Mary Williamson, Flag Committee Chair, to Mr. Mark Rodeffer. The objectives of the DAR Flag Committee are to protect our flag, to educate others on its proper usage, and to KEEP IT FLYING! Mr. Mark Rodeffer was chosen for his beautiful display of hundreds of flags. Mark began the Simpsonville Honors Flag Field in July 2012 as a project to bring the community together for a massive patriotic display in honor of Veterans Day. The Public Relations Award was presented by Pam Evans, Public Relations Committee Chair, to Mr. Bobby M. Dill, publisher and editor-in-chief, since May 1994, of the weekly Conservative newspaper, The Times Examiner. The objective of the Public Relations Committee is to enlighten the public of DAR objectives and accomplishments to increase public support and appreciation of our work through historic preservation, education and patriotism. Mr. Dill was honored for his wonderful service to the community for reporting not only important national and local events, but also for his coverage of the meetings and activities of many local and national heritage groups, due to his desire to preserve our history and our heritage by educating the public on the founding principles of our forefathers and the historical greatness of our beloved country and its founding fathers.

Good Citizenship Awards and Good Citizens Awards were presented by Mary Downing and Angie Mayes, Co-Chairs of the Student Awards Committee. Good Citizenship Awards were presented to Jadisja Jones, Bryson Middle School; Veronica Clevenstine, Hillcrest Middle School; Hannah Houtz, Ralph Chandler Middle School; Abigail McGovern, Shannon Forest Christian School; James Sterling Crowder, Southside Christian School; and Zoe Grace Jackson, Woodmont Middle School. This DAR award is presented by Snow Campaign Chapter to eighth grade students who fulfill the qualities of honor, service, courage, leadership and patriotism. Daughters of the American Revolution believe that education of our youth about American citizenship is of supreme importance for national defense. It is most important to foster among students a greater appreciation of the qualities of citizenship needed by our country if it is to retain sovereignty and independence.

Good Citizens Awards were presented to Katherine Stannetia Allen, Hillcrest High School; Zachary Parke Girvin, Mauldin High School; Jesse Brent Turner, Shannon Forest Christian School; Trevor Timothy Drummond, Southside Christian School; and Leah Katherine Garrett, Woodmont High School. The DAR Good Citizens program is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship. The program is open to senior class students enrolled in accredited public or private secondary schools that are in good standing with state boards of education. The student selected for the school’s DAR Good Citizen must have the following qualities: Dependability, which includes truthfulness, loyalty and punctuality; Service, which includes cooperation, courtesy and consideration of others; Leadership, which includes personality, self-control, and ability to assume responsibility; and Patriotism, which includes unselfish interest in family, school, community and nation to an outstanding degree.

Zacharay-Parke-GirvinMr. Zachary Parke Girvin was the winner of the DAR Good Citizens Chapter Essay Winner contest. Mr. Girvin read his essay to those assembled at the Awards Ceremony. In addition to the awards given by the Snow Campaign Chapter, he also received a gift from the Augusta Road Ruritan Club, presented by Snow Campaign member Kathy Moore.

Ladies with a love of historic preservation, education and patriotism, who have ancestors who served in the Revolutionary War or who provided support for the Patriots, are encouraged to attend our meetings and join the DAR.
