The meeting of the Joseph Evan Davis 907 Children of the Confederacy Chapter was held Sunday, Oct. 19, 2014, on the beautiful front porch of the historic Ashtabula Plantation.  Pam Durham, President of Winnie Davis 442 UDC began by installing the new 2014-2015 Chapter officers.  Miss Allison Bolt, newly installed President, opened the meeting according to ritual then adjourned to tour the house. The children were joined by five members of the Winnie Davis 442 UDC chapter and three members of the 16th SCV Camp #36.

Ashtabula was built in 1828 by Lewis Ladson Gibbs of Charleston, SC. The Plantation changed hands many times over the years with each owner adding to its history. In 1961 Mead Corporation gave the house and 10 acres to the Pendleton Historic Foundation. In 1971 the home was placed on the National Register of Historic Places where it’s operated as a house museum.

Next month’s meeting on Nov 16, 2014, the children will be celebrating veterans of all wars by touring the American Legion Post 3 Cecil B. Buchanan War Museum on North Main Street in the historic section of Greenville, SC.  Anyone who wishes to have their children involved in the group is encouraged to contact Pamela Durham (padurham00@gmail

.com) or Robin Kyle (robink

@clemson.edu).  The children’s group will focus on fun ways to learn more about history this year, and will involve many unique activities.
