Bookwell Travel continues on their national quest to donate 16 million meals by the end of 2021

Greenville, SC (April 24, 2021) - On Saturday, April 24rd, at 12p, Bookwell Travel will donate 25,000 meals to Soteria CDC. The donation will be held at the center, 210 Shaw Street, Greenville, SC 29611 as part of the next phase of Bookwell Travel’s national launch. Leading up to the donation, Bookwell Travel founder Brian Gates will run for 12 hours, starting just after midnight, from The Westin Poinsett, Greenville, SC to raise awareness for “End 12 Hours of Hunger.”

“We are an online booking platform that puts feeding the hungry first. It’s a philosophy that is at the core of our business,” said Brian Gates. “Bookwell Travel was founded with a mission to fight the hunger crisis in America. I want to ask people to join our mission to donate 16 million meals by the end of the year by booking their next trip through BookwellTravel.com.”

The food donation in Greenville marks the continuous effort of Bookwell Travel’s national campaign to feed the hungry in every state in the United States by partnering directly with community organizations like Councilmember Lillian Brock Flemming and the Soteria Community Development Center. With everyone's continuous efforts with bookings made through BookwellTravel.com it will allow us to be back monthly.

Councilmember Lillian Brock Flemming, says “there is no more basic human need than to be wellnourished, no more basic right than to have enough to eat. Yet even today, in this great nation and in our great city, too many people; children, seniors, veterans who have served and sacrificed for us all, people who have fallen on hard times, go to bed hungry. The pandemic which has challenged us all has only made this worse. I salute Brian Gates, Bookwell, and the Stronger Together organization for stepping forward in true American spirit to combat hunger in our community. I am grateful for their assistance and inspiration and proud to partner with them in this service to our neighbors.”

Bookwell Travel has donated meals to community organizations in Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Georgia with plans to donate 16 million meals to organizations fighting food insecurity by the end of the year.

About Greenville City Councilmember Lillian Brock Flemming

Lillian Brock Flemming has served the people of Greenville City Council District 2, and indeed all of the people of Greenville for forty years. She has been a fierce defender of and relentless advocate for respecting the dignity of all people, protecting the rights of all people, and raising the conditions of our neighborhoods so that all people live in the highest quality of life. On the City Council, she has earned a reputation as a coalition builder, with a track record of bringing together people of all races and religions, businesses, non-profits, neighborhood associations, colleges, and other stakeholders.

Lillian was born and reared in the Southernside neighborhood of Greenville. Today, Lillian and her husband live in the house where she attended 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade – at what was then the segregated and all-black Oscar Street Elementary. Lillian went on to attend 4th – 7th grades at Gower Street Elementary, and then 8th – 12th at Sterling High School.

She became active in her church, canvassing for voter registration at 14 years old with the Greenville NAACP Youth, attending National Council of Negro Women meetings, and volunteering with the late City Councilwoman Lottie Gibson. Lillian also served her Neighborhood Association, helping sign children up for free dental and other social services provided in the evenings, and babysitting and reading to them in waiting rooms.

After college, Lillian remained in Greenville and assisted her mother with making sandwiches for the food insecure in their neighborhood, eventually moving the operation into a facility from which they could serve. Lillian’s mother started this ministry because she’d always wanted to be a Christian missionary, and she instilled the importance of serving others into all of her children, including Lillian.

Lillian and her husband, Reverend JM Flemming, also passed-down this value to their 10 children (7 sons and 3 daughters), requiring them to feed the hungry on Thanksgiving and Christmas annually, before their own celebrations. Reverend Flemming cooked on every holiday and transported meals, as well as provided transportation to those without a way to get to their families on those days.
