If Convicted, First Offense Carries No Less than 1 year in Prison and No More than 10 years

Greenville County Schools have experienced a rash of bomb threats in recent days. Three high school students have now been arrested and charged with “conveying false information regarding attempted use of a destructive device,” a felony.

On December 17, Eastside High School was evacuated in the morning hours due to a Bomb Threat. A student at the school located the threat which was written on a note and notified school administrators. Once everyone was out of the school, staff conducted a search of the entire school and did not locate any suspicious devices.

Through the course of the investigation it was determined that two freshman students, ages 14 and 15 were responsible for writing the threat. On December 19 and 20, the students were charged for conveying false information regarding attempted use of a destructive device, and disturbing school. The case has been forwarded to Family Court.

The penalty for conveying false information regarding attempted use of a destructive device if found guilty is a Felony and, upon conviction, for the first offense must be imprisoned for not less than one year nor more than ten years.

On December 18 Berea High School was evacuated in the afternoon hours due to a Bomb Threat. An employee of the school located the threat which was written on a bathroom wall inside the school. Once everyone was out of the school, staff and the RSO conducted a search of the entire school and did not locate any suspicious devices.

Through the course of the investigation, it was determined that a 15 year old student who is a sophomore at the school was responsible for writing the threat. The student was arrested, charged and placed in the Greenville County Detention

Center.

It is not clear how these incidents have been handled in the past, however it is becoming clear that authorities are no longer taking such crimes lightly. The sheriff’s office has made it clear that “this type of threat is taken very seriously and will not be tolerated. An investigation will occur and criminal charges will be filed once those who are responsible are identified.”
