Presentation by Pam Evans
Mrs. Pam Evans is a Presbyterian Pastor’s wife and a member of the Winnie Davis Chapter # 442, United Daughters of the Confederacy, that sponsors the Joseph Evan Davis Chapter of Children of the Confederacy. She is Director of the chapter.
Mrs. Evans discussed the purpose of the national organization and some of the activities of the local chapter during the August meeting of the 16th Regiment, S. C. Volunteers, SCV.
The Children of the Confederacy is an organization for children from birth to 18 years who have Confederate ancestors. The purpose of the organization is stated in its creed:
Because we desire to perpetuate, in love and honor, the heroic deeds of those who enlisted in the Confederate Services, and upheld its flag during four years of war, we, the children of the South, have united in an organization called the “Children of the Confederacy,” in which our strength, enthusiasm and love of justice can exert its influence. We therefore pledge ourselves to preserve pure ideas: to honor the memory of our beloved Veterans; to study and teach the truths of history (one of the most important of which is, that the War Between the States was not a rebellion, nor was its underlying cause to sustain slavery). And always to act in a manner that will reflect honor upon our noble patriotic ancestors.
Mrs. Evans listed the five goals of the organization and efforts of the Joseph Evan Davis Chapter to accomplish these goals.
“The organization has five goals,which are: Historical, Educational, Benevolent, Patriotic and Memorial.
“Efforts are made to accomplish these goals through meetings, projects honoring veterans and current military, and attending memorial services.”
The Davis Chapter is for children in the Greenville area. Those from Greer, Easley, Powdersville, Travelers Rest, Mauldin, Simpsonville, Spartanburg and other surrounding areas are encouraged to attend as well.
Mrs. Evans explained that “meetings this past year have included a number of educational topics, such as, Veterans, Confederate ancestors, Sam Davis, the role of the Cherokee Indians in the War Between the States, the Christian Character of Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis and his family and inauguration, the flags of the
Confederacy, the Firing on Fort Sumter, and Sesquicentennial observances. In the coming year and throughout the four years of Sesquicentennial commemorations, we plan to remember the events that happened during the current month 150 years ago. The meetings include guest speakers, presentations by the children, activities such as coloring contests and Confederate catechism contests, and food, fun and fellowship with young people who have the same values and love of Southern heritage. In this day of ‘political correctness,’ these meetings encourage the young people to know that they are not alone and that there are others who share their love of the truth of the Southern Cause. Attendance at the meetings also encourages them to have courage to defend their heritage and the brave, courageous stand taken by our Confederate Ancestors who defended our homeland against invasion. We try to instill love and admiration for the values, honor, strong Christian character and faith in God of so many of these valiant ones who have gone before, many of whom willingly gave their lives in defense of their homeland.
“Chapter projects have included: cards for veterans and current military personnel, clothing for Miracle Hill Industries, food for Backpack Ministries and Angel Ministries, aluminum cans to benefit children that are burn victims, aluminum pop tops and small toiletries for Ronald McDonald House, cancelled postage stamps for Wounded Warriors, labels and box tops for Education, money ($500 donated from our “Chapter, $5,200 total raised from all the chapters) to send 10-12 World War II Veterans on an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., Toys for Tots, and school supplies for needy children.
“The children enjoyed participating in the Christmas in Dixie event at the Museum and Library of Confederate History in December of last year, and they were pleased to participate in the
Confederate Memorial Service at Springwood Cemetery in May.
“Two chapter officers, Cameron Norris and Hope Ducker, are also Division officers. Next may, the South Carolina Division convention will be held in Greenville, S. C. and the Joseph Evan Davis chapter will be the host.”
