The family of Hazel Eugenia Willis Spencer and more than 200 invited friends held a One Hundredth Birthday Celebration for Mrs. Spencer at Locust Hill Baptist Church, Saturday January 4, 2014. She was born on January 6, 1914.

There were many memorable moments for Mrs. Spencer during the celebration, including the presentation of a beautiful rose by her great grandson Sullivan Jones.

Guests were treated to an elaborate buffet luncheon prepared and served by relatives and friends. The buffet featured dozens of cakes and other deserts.

Since the death of her husband, Mrs. Spencer has lived alone and continues to handle household chores. But this was her special occasion that lasted through her birthday on Monday, January 6, the day that Greenville County Council declared Hazel Eugenia Willis Spencer Day in Greenville County. On this special day, County Councilman Joe Dill announced: “You don’t have to work.”

Mrs Spencer is a lifelong resident of the Locust Hill community where she and her husband raised their three children: Joann Spencer Jones, Joyce Spencer Fisher, and Tom Spencer.

Locust Hill Baptist Church Pastor Bill Pfister delivered  meaningful prayer to open the celebration.

Mrs Spencer was presented a personal letter from Governor Nikki Haley and a birthday greeting from Weatherman Willard Scott.

She received Proclamations from both houses of state government and Greenville County Council.

All three elected officials  presenting Proclamations, like Mrs. Spencer, are lifelong residents of Northern Greenville County.

State Senator Tom Corbin, State Representative Mike Burns and Greenville County Councilman Joe Dill made presentations and delivered birthday greetings to Mrs. Spencer.

The presentations ended with young Sullivan Jones presenting a single rose that earned him a special hug from his great grandmother during her 100th Birthday Celebration.
