What Made America Great III
- By Ray Simmons
I don’t think most Americans realize that the Declaration of Independence is a separate document created before the Constitution but is considered, in a sense, to be part of the Constitution, to be its basis. The two documents were not signed by the same people, but both were signed by individuals representing all thirteen colonies and there is some overlap. The Declaration has been said to be the soul of the Constitution and to be the basis for our separation from British Law to natural law, which gives to man freedoms of Life, Liberty and Property, which government cannot take away.

What Made America Great II
- By Ray Simmons
A friend read the first article I wrote on this topic and commented he hoped I would make it a series. I think I might give it a shot because many Americans have no idea of how our greatness was made possible, and why it is now being denigrated… especially those we call millennials. Most readers will probably already have identified me as a senior citizen. I won’t tell you just how senior I am but the automobile had already been invented when I arrived. Nobody on our block owned one. You will have to forgive me if I sometimes seem to be repeating myself. Often that is the only way to clarify some new information. Many books have been written covering our topic and I will be referencing some of them. I will do my best to identify them with footnotes if not in the text itself. At this early point I offer this quote from W. Cleon Skousen’s “The Making of America.”

What Made America Great?
- By Ray Simmons
Watching the news, reading commentaries and seeing TV specials I find the question raised by the above title is getting a good bit of attention. A certain book author is also presenting interviews in TV specials looking into many topics he ascribes as reasons for America’s greatness. Others have commented on the successful moon visits as evidence showing our greatness. Great individual business magnates are pointed to. Our military contributions to the success of several wars is considered a strong support of our greatness, as is the fact that we became the wealthiest and freest nation ever conceived. Many people point to certain Presidents, such as Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln, as evidence of our claim to greatness. But some people, these days, are saying our Founding Fathers were just a group of greedy white men making themselves rich at the cost of slavery for some, and stolen land from others.

Our Political Circus
- By Ray Simmons
I have written in several places about the political circus I am observing. When Donald Trump was elected I thought we might find a way back to sanity. Some few have, but factors beyond Trump’s reach are working to remove him from Office and undo the elements of common sense he put in motion. If most Americans will see to his reelection next year a slim possibility to preserve our nation will remain.

Tear Down Those Monuments
- By Ray Simmons
I understand quoting Scripture is anathema these days, nevertheless I deem it very appropriate in many instances. For several years I have been getting the Hillsdale College publication “Imprimis”. I have just been reading the most recent issue (February 2019) titled “Shall We Defend Our Common History?” It is a scathing attack against the current, politically correct assault on many, many historical monuments representing various segments of actual historic eras and events that some minority groups find offensive. The author(Roger Kimball) calls this “…an attack on the past for failing to live up to our contemporary notions of virtue…that we, blessed members of the most enlightened cohort ever to grace the earth with its presence, occupy a moral plane superior to all who came before us.” In other words we are the smartest people to ever live and we can alter history to prove our point. Mr. Kimball goes on to offer much support for his commentary.
