As the Church in Nigeria Bleeds, Equipping the Persecuted Calls on the United Nations to Confront the Genocide of Christians in the Middle Belt
NEW YORK — A Terror Alert issued through Equipping the Persecuted (ETP)’s Truth Nigeria network on Saturday helped avert a wider massacre after attacks began Sunday in Nigeria’s Middle Belt. At least 60 deaths have been confirmed so far, and attacks are ongoing, the latest evidence that the slaughter of Christians in Nigeria continues unchecked by the Nigerian government.
Residents say the early warning gave them critical time to prepare. Without it, locals report, the death toll would have been far higher.
“Our Terror Alerts give Christians a chance to survive that they would not otherwise have. But warning people is not enough. The killing has to stop,” said Judd Saul, founder of Equipping the Persecuted.
Equipping the Persecuted says Washington and international media continue to overlook a central part of this crisis: attacks targeting Christians because of their faith.
President Trump addressed the United Nations today as world leaders gathered in New York, saying “the craven hypocrites of the Human Rights Council have little to say about the persecution of Christians.” In a statement, Saul said Trump’s remarks raised the question the world body still has not answered: “Where is the UN while Christians in Nigeria are being slaughtered, driven from their homes, and terrorized for their faith?” Saul added, “Silence is not neutrality. It has a body count.”
ETP is calling on the UN to formally recognize the genocide of Christians in Nigeria, with Nigeria’s Vice President slated to speak Thursday. “We are asking the United Nations to call this what it is: genocide,” Saul said. “Anything less is a failure to protect the human rights and religious freedom they claim to support.”
