COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Joint Citizens and Legislative Committee on Children is holding five public hearings across the state this fall to receive input and recommendations from South Carolinians on issues affecting children, youth and families.
The hearings provide residents an opportunity to bring concerns, personal experiences and potential policy or legislative changes directly before the Committee. Parents, youth, caregivers, educators, advocates, service providers and other interested members of the public are encouraged to participate.
Public testimony gathered during the hearings helps inform the Committee’s research and recommendations to the South Carolina General Assembly.
Established under South Carolina law, the Joint Citizens and Legislative Committee on Children studies issues affecting children on its own initiative or at the request of the General Assembly. The Committee includes members appointed from the South Carolina House and Senate as well as members appointed by the Governor, along with representatives of several state agencies serving as nonvoting members.
The Committee is required to submit an annual report to the Governor, President of the Senate and Speaker of the House detailing its work and providing findings and recommendations on children’s issues it has studied.

With the Conway hearing already completed, the next hearing will be held Tuesday, September 29, at Greenville Technical College, giving Upstate residents an opportunity to speak directly to the Committee.
Individuals wishing to testify or attend a hearing are encouraged to register through Eventbrite. Those registering to testify will be allotted three minutes to address the Committee. Walk-in speakers may also sign up at the hearing, although opportunities for same-day testimony are limited and cannot be guaranteed.
