On March12, the Bob Jones University student body came together for a day of friendly competition, fun and fireworks during “Gold Rush Daze.”

The Gold Rush Daze competition happens just once every four years. BJU senior Victoria Sparkman said this time frame helps the student body look forward to it. “I think of it like the Bob Jones Olympics,” Sparkman said.

The BJU student body was divided into two teams, Green Thunder and Red Lightning, with faculty being able to join either team. While the competition games kicked off in the afternoon, the day was started with faculty members serving breakfast in bed to students in the residence halls.

The competition between Green Thunder and Red Lightning began in Alumni Stadium with a parade by the two teams. Among the parade participants were military veterans, BJU President Dr. Stephen Jones, school deans and hundreds of students dressed in team colors.

There were nine different games during the face-off between Red Lightning and Green Thunder. Among the games were classics like tug-of-war, but there were also more unique games like squatter signals, where hundreds of students had to form shapes and spell out “BJU.”

When the last game ended, the Red Lightning team won by a mere 50 points. However, the student body came together in the Founders Memorial Amphitorium to watch a special program where faculty performed skits and humorous musical presentations.

The day ended at Alumni Stadium with a time of singing hymns and a fireworks display.
