A darkened room.  Sputtering engines.  An electronic voice repeating a warning message as the computer screen fractures into hundreds of tiny unidentifiable images.  Although not part of the typical back-to-school experience, students in Ms. Benton’s class at Washington Center found themselves in such a position as they worked to solve puzzles during a Labor Day escape room activity.

Following a series of video prompts, picture symbols, and hidden clues, the students worked together to learn more about the history of Labor Day and how people across the country continue to celebrate.  Although the students were challenged, they eagerly adopted their roles as time-traveling detectives and were successfully able to find the answers they needed to escape from the 19thcentury.
