As technology becomes increasingly embedded in our everyday lives, a growing debate is emerging over just how much privacy Americans are willing to surrender in exchange for convenience and security.
At FreedomFest, Sam Bushman of Liberty United sat down with privacy educator Glenn Meder of Privacy Academy to discuss the rapidly changing digital landscape — from social-media algorithms and artificial intelligence to online child-safety laws, digital identification and the future of anonymity on the internet.
Meder argues that privacy is more than simply keeping personal information away from corporations. He describes it as a foundation for free speech, freedom of the press and individual liberty, while warning that the combination of technology and government regulation could create an increasingly centralized system of digital control.
In the interview, Meder also explains why he believes people need to take practical steps to protect their privacy — and why he says defending liberty ultimately has to begin at the local level.
