LOVELAND, Colo. -- The creators of a new church security training kit invite churches to see safety and security through a ministry-focused lens.

Responding to increased concerns about violence in houses of worship, Group Publishing developed the Safe and Secure Church: A Ministry Approach training kit to help churches improve their safety and security plans, processes, and procedures. Craig Cable, security expert and lead developer of the kit, said, "People expect their churches to be not only welcoming but also safe. Group responded to that expectation by offering best practices in safety and security that are also compassionate and ministry-focused."

According to Cable, "Churches are putting themselves at a greater risk because they're focusing too heavily on some threats while overlooking others that are much more likely to occur. It's important to have an objective and comprehensive view of safety and security needs, and this kit provides that."

The Safe and Secure Church kit was developed in partnership with Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company and contains 10 DVDs as well as published materials covering a wide range of topics, including:

- Determining a church's risk and liability

- Protecting children and youth

- Developing a strategic risk assessment

- Establishing safety and security processes and procedures

- Recruiting and training a safety and security team

- Responding to specific medical and security scenarios

- Responding to an active shooter

The contents of the kit were informed by a variety of ministry, legal, law enforcement, and medical experts.
