SPARTANBURG: No. 11 U.S. Growth City of 2024
PHOENIX, Ariz. — Spartanburg is the No. 11 U.S. Growth City of 2024, according to the U-Haul Growth Index analyzing one-way customer moves over the past year.
Of all the U-Haul traffic to come and go from Spartanburg last year, 52.5% was incoming and 47.5% outgoing.
Looking at year-over-year variations, arrivals were down 3% in 2024 (compared to 2023) while departures were down nearly 10%. With more residents staying, Spartanburg posted a larger net gain of U-Haul customers.
In addition to its annual top 25 growth cities list, U-Haul recognized its top 25 growth metropolitan areas for the first time. The top growth cities (city propers) are from markets outside the leading metros, allowing more communities to be recognized for their ability to attract and retain do-it-yourself movers.

“There are a lot of job opportunities throughout the Spartanburg area,” stated Emily Noe, U-Haul Company of Western North Carolina president, whose territory includes parts of South Carolina. “We have Amazon® warehouses and Walmart® distribution centers here. Both of these centers create many jobs. We also have both a BMW® factory and a FedEx® airport hub in Greer, a neighboring city that brings in people to this area.
“Spartanburg sits right in the middle of Greenville and Ashville, and it’s right off of Interstate 85, which connects Charlotte and Atlanta. That makes it a very convenient location for commuters to live. Many people who live here will drive to Greenville or Charlotte for work.”
The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled from well over 2.5 million one-way truck, trailer and U-Box® portable moving container transactions that occur annually in the U.S. and Canada.
Florida boasts five of the leading 25 growth cities. Tennessee, Washington and Alabama each have three. Virginia has two of the top four cities, both located within 50 miles of Washington, D.C.

While U-Haul rankings may not correlate directly to population or economic growth, the U-Haul Growth Index is an effective gauge of how well states, metros and cities are attracting and retaining residents.
U-Haul is the authority on migration trends thanks to its expansive network that blankets all 50 states and 10 Canadian provinces. The geographical coverage from 23,000-plus U-Haul rental locations provides a broad overview of where people are moving like no one else in the industry.
U-Haul continues to benefit the environment through its shared-use business model. Truck and trailer sharing empowers communities to share moving equipment so that families and individuals don’t need to own large-capacity vehicles to transfer belongings. Sustainability initiatives like U-Haul Adaptive Reuse (the preserving and repurposing of existing buildings for new stores), truck modifications to improve fuel economy, and plastic Ready-To-Go Boxes® that are shared hundreds of times before being recycled are among the ways U-Haul promotes green business. U-Box Load Share, the Company’s latest sustainability program, continues to earn awards for providing ecofriendly solutions to today’s gig economy.
