INDEPENDENT CONSERVATIVE VOICE OF
UPSTATE SOUTH CAROLINA

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jeff Duncan (SC-03) released the following statement on the Agriculture and Nutrition Act of 2018, also known as the Farm Bill:

“At a time when the national unemployment rate is at a fifty year low, historic tax cuts are in place, and there are more job openings than job seekers, it’s inexcusable to not address broken and costly welfare programs in our country. Unfortunately, Congress abandoned this task and expanded the welfare state in the Farm Bill conference report.

“While the legislation is called the Farm Bill, eighty percent of the spending in the bill deals with welfare spending instead of agriculture. I would have liked to consider a Farm Bill focused on just that – farms and farmers – but I didn’t have that option today and had to oppose the bill. In June, I supported the House version of the Farm Bill since it contained critical food stamp reforms, welfare reforms, and work requirements that help get people off of government programs and into the workforce. The final conference report abandoned many of these key provisions.

“Ultimately, the conference report is a missed opportunity and an irresponsible government welfare expansion that I could not support.”
