THE NATIONALITY WARS (CA. 2170 A.D.—CA. 2310 A.D.)

(A continuation of a lecture by a fictional “history professor” to a class of young adults, sometime in the 32nd century.)
“We concluded our last session detailing the splitting apart of the original Old United States into several smaller countries, and the rise and fall of what was the most successful of those smaller countries—The Confederated Republics of America. This session will deal with what many historians call the beginning of the end of civilization on the Great Northern Continent. Similar evils were perpetrated on the Great Southern Continent during this time also, but we’ll limit the scope of this delving into man’s evil nature just to the GNC and to Euro.
“What little we know of this terrible time in world history comes mainly from source material in the Research Library of Dallez, which has been gathering historical data on this time of barbarity, hatred, disease, short lives, and death for over 200 years. By the late 21st century, after a short-lived attempt at global government by a group called “United World”, all of the new smaller states—i.e. new, smaller countries that had once comprised the Old United States, were fighting each other with the conventional weapons of that time, and with tactical battlefield nuclear devices launched on missiles or dropped from aircraft.
“The historical records from this time period were, as all of you know, almost totally destroyed in the insanity and pseudo-religious frenzies that became the dominant way of life for many decades. But from the extant records that have been discovered over the past two or three centuries, we know that The People’s Republic of Caloregon launched
attacks against Britannic Columbia and against The Republic of Aztlan and even, if old records in Aztlan are correct, against some targets in Mamooda. Mamooda (called The Mamooden Protectorate at that time) launched counterattacks on Caloregon, on the nation of Democrata, and on parts of the newly formed Confederated Republics of America. That country attacked no one, but valiantly defended itself with its, at that time, superior armed forces.
“This endless warfare continued, we believe, until the mid-22nd century, at which time the ultimate barbarity was unleashed by several of these new countries on the GNC: Bacteriological weapons of terrifying effectiveness were used against each of the opposing countries, except for The Tribal Protectorate (now The Western Republic). The history of this epoch of destruction and chaos becomes very murky from this point on, for these years, beginning sometime in the middle of the 22nd century (as closely as we can determine), marked the total destruction of Western Civilization as it had been defined up to that time.
“The new countries of Mamooda, Democrata, and what had been The Confederated Republics (which became so chaotic and violent that it had no new name until the middle of the 25th century), plus much of Canador, suffered the worst of the bacteriological attacks that continued for decades. Even Aztlan obtained these weapons and used them to attack both Mamooda and The People’s Republic of Caloregon. It has been reliably estimated that a minimum of 80% of the population of what was the eastern half of the Old United States was killed off during these ‘Nationality Wars”, and vast portions of the Great Northern Continent became void of any population. It has also been estimated that Aztlan lost at least 50% of its population during this insanity.
“Simultaneously during these years of brutal total warfare, the countries that had composed the New Euro Union were involved in their own bacteriological and nuclear destruction, centered on religious conflicts between the Empire of Chin and the large forces loyal to the god of the Europeans who called themselves Inshalists, and which became the dominant religious belief in Euro. Its adherents were a large number of the population who identified with the sect known as “Moslemists” in Mamooda, for their belief systems appeared almost identical. These people despised the Chin and their allies with a ferocity unknown in modern times. The devastation of New Euro became continent-wide, and culminated in the annihilation of Western Civilization in a manner similar to what occurred on the GNC. Only a few outposts of Christian civilization held on for varying periods of time—in the country of Old Scotland, and in the fiercely independent country of Old Switzerland. Even in those two stalwart enclaves the plagues caused by the bacteriological weapons decimated their populations. As the “Dark Time” began to slowly spread over much of the planet, ca. 2300 A.D., an estimated 80% to 90% of the population of New Euro had been wiped out, along with similar horrors in most of the Continent of Afraka and much of New Perzia.
“In the eastern half of the Great Northern Continent, persecution of all people of the Negro, or Black, race began in earnest in the late 2200’s, although we suspect that it had begun long before this. “Legal killing” of any Negro person, if such can be believed, was not only permitted but was encouraged by whatever government entity was in control for a time in these new small countries. Coupled with the previous bacteriological weapons that had been unleashed with abandon earlier, the effects of which seemed to intensify or cause severe sickle cell anemia in people of the Negro race (a disease which has been eliminated in our day), an estimated 95% of Negro people were eliminated from Old Democrata and Old Mamooda by the beginning of “The Dark Time”.
“Admittedly, the scant records we have discovered over time reveal that milder persecution of the Negro, or Black, population also occurred in the former Confederated Republics toward the end of “The Nationality Wars”, but seems to have been brought to a swift halt by the surviving Christian population and others in the new government, when the Republic of Gorga-Caro was formed around the middle of the 25th century.. What persecution transpired against the Negro population during “The Dark Time” is unknown, for life became brutish and very short for everyone during this time of “Sheol on Terra”. From mostly oral histories provided by our citizens of Negro racial backgrounds, we believe that at least 70% of that population in what had been the Confederated Republics were killed by the plagues or by induced and insane violence and racial hatred. A terrible chapter in an equally terrible time.”
