Project Receiving $2.2 Million in ARRA Funds

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) have granted approximately $2.2 million for the rehabilitation of the Slater Sanitary Sewer System (SSSS). Renewable Water Resources (ReWa) initiated the grant funding application process with Metropolitan Sewer Sub-District (MSSD) on behalf of SSSS from the Federal America Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Stimulus Package. SC Senator Phillip W. Shoopman, House Speaker Pro Tempore Harry F. Cato and Greenville County Councilman Joe Dill were key supporters in securing the much-needed grant funding for this project.

The existing SSSS was constructed by the Slater Mill in the late 1920’s and is in need of significant rehabilitation. ReWa, SCDHEC, and the Slater Water, Light and Sewer Commission requested MSSD sponsor the application for the grant for the construction of the proposed SSSS Rehabilitation Project and also to accept ownership of the system upon completion of construction. MSSD Commissioners Jim Freeland (Chair) and Bill Lindsey were instrumental in the development and completion of the agreement.

BP Barber is providing the professional engineering services for the project and Williams Brothers has been awarded the contract for the construction work. The rehabilitation project will consist of relocating the sewer lines from the rear of the properties to the streets.   Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2010.

MSSD is assisting the Slater Commission in providing information about the project to the property owners in the area. The properties in the Slater Water, Light and Sewer District have been annexed into Metropolitan’s tax district and the Slater Commission has transferred ownership of the existing sewer system to MSSD.  Property owners with sewer issues should contact MSSD at 864.277.4442.  MSSD provides 24 hour on call services to its customers.
