Joseph Evan Davis Chapter #907, Children of the Confederacy, met on Saturday, September 21, 2013. Miss Trinity Grace Bingham received her membership certificate and was welcomed into the Chapter with an ice cream sundae celebration following the meeting. The new officers for 2013-2014 were installed by Mrs. Carol Leake, President of Oliver Thompson UDC Chapter No. 1850 in Fountain Inn, SC, Past Third Vice President of the SC Division UDC and Past SC Division Director of the Children of the Confederacy.

The new officers are: Mr. Andrew Myers, President; Miss Allison Bolt, Vice President; Miss Chandler Tucker, Second Vice President; Mr. John Myers, Third Vice President; Mr. Matthew Myers, Chaplain; Miss Trinity Grace Bingham, Recording Secretary; Miss Caitlyn Tucker, Treasurer; Miss Caroline Tucker, Historian; Miss Charlotte Tucker, Newsletter Editor; and Mr. Jackson Tucker, Custodian. In honor of the 226th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States, the program was presented by Miss Chandler Marie Tucker.

Some of the facts that she presented were: The Constitution of the United States is the supreme law of the land.  The Constitution originally consisted of seven Articles. The first three Articles define the doctrine of the separation of powers into three branches: the legislative, the executive and the judicial. The fourth and sixth Articles provide the doctrine of federalism, describing the relationship between State and State, and between the States and the federal government. The fifth Article defines the procedure for amending the Constitution.

Joseph-Evan-Davis---NarrowThe seventh Article defines the procedure for ratifying the Constitution. The Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787, by the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was ratified by conventions in eleven States. It went into effect on March 4, 1789. The first ten amendments to the Constitution, also known as the Bill of Rights, were proposed by Congress on September 25, 1789, and were ratified by the necessary three-fourths of the States on December 15, 1791. America's Constitution was the first of its kind, and it has influenced the constitutions of many other countries. Constitution Week is now commemorated every year from September 17-23, and September 17 is Constitution Day.

This year marks the 226th year of the framing of our beloved Constitution. Pocket copies of the Constitution were available for any of the children in attendance who wished to have one. Mr. Jackson Tucker recited the Preamble to the Constitution. Mrs. Pam Durham presented a description of the Battle Above the Clouds, fought in Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, on November 24, 1863, from the CofC program by Stewart Inman, Recording Secretary General of the CofC, published in the UDC Magazine, May 2013. To continue our observance of the Sesquicentennial of the War Between the States, she also presented some of the events from the War that occurred 150 years ago in September of 1863.

The children brought school supplies for needy school children as their project for September. The Chapter is selling Legacy of Taste cookbooks published by the Greenville Woman's Club as a fund raiser for projects and scholarships. The projects for October will be the collection of new toys for Country Santa, gifts for gift bags for veterans, and gift cards to be distributed to Wounded Warriors in Walter Reed Medical Center on Veterans Day. Ongoing projects include: cancelled stamps for Wounded Warrior Projects; aluminum pop tops for Ronald McDonald House; aluminum cans to benefit burn victims; miniature toiletries for Safe Harbor, Shepherd's Gate, and Ronald McDonald House; plastic caps for educational purposes; fronts of greeting cards (no writing on the back) for St. Jude's Children's Hospital; and box tops and labels for education.

Joseph Evan Davis Chapter #907, Children of the Confederacy, meets on the third Saturday of each month from September through March, with the exception of December, when the Chapter members attend Christmas in Dixie at the Museum and Library of Confederate History. We encourage young people from the age of birth through 18 years, who have Confederate ancestors, and who wish to learn the true history of the South, to attend our meetings and become part of our organization.
