Disabled Veterans Billed for Taxes, Fees Not Owed

As Veterans Day approached, Greenville County Council members began getting calls from 100 percent disabled veterans who had received surprise tax bills in the mail.

South Carolina law exempts 100 percent disabled veterans from paying property tax. In order to receive the property tax exemption, the disabled veteran must apply for the exemption through the South Carolina Department of Revenue.

Greenville County Auditor Scott Case said the Department of Revenue provides the auditor’s off ice with a list of vehicles for which a veteran has received an exemption.

A number of disabled veterans received bills for the $15 road fee in error. Case informed council members that, “The County has not charged this fee in the past to veterans who qualify for a property tax exemption. These bills resulted from a series of coding changes that took place last year.

Case advised council members that “all auto bills for veterans who qualify will be adjusted to zero” and those who have paid fees  will receive refunds.

Veterans who have a 100 percent disability rating by the VA and have not done so should contact the Department of Revenue to obtain the proper forms and apply for the tax exemption.

Assistance is available through the Greenville County Veteran Affairs office located at County Square. Phone 467-7230.
