UPSTATE SOUTH CAROLINA

“Opportunity” will Preclude Continued Service As Party Chairman

Betty-Poe---7-3-13The Greenville County Republican Party Executive Committee was caught by surprise on June 17 when they were informed by their popular second term chairman that she was resigning effective immediately.

The letter of resignation only hinted at the reason for the resignation.

An opportunity has arisen for me that you will hear about in much more detail in the next few weeks that will preclude me from serving in the capacity as a party chairman.

Mrs. Poe thanked the Greenville County Republican Party for their trust and confidence in her and her leadership during the past two years, adding:

We have accomplished much together. From continuing to stand strong on our party’s platform, holding our elected officials accountable, and leading the fight for Registration by Party to co-hosting an Upstate presidential forum that set the stage for the real primary contest, raising several thousand dollars for our Party and fielding a large slate of primary and general candidates in the 2012 election cycle, we have truly earned our place as “the most conservative party in the state of South Carolina.”

The First Vice-Chairman will call and conduct a meeting of the Executive Committee and elect a new chairman. There is no immediate urgency to hold that meeting and elect a new chairman, however, the party has a lot of work to do before the 2014 elections next year.

In closing, Chairman Poe stated:

It has truly been an honor to serve as your chairman. The friendships cultivated and relationships developed with hard working, dedicated grassroots activists like you will be something I will always cherish.

Betty Poe has been the most consistently influential individual in the Greenville County Republican Party for a decade. She was instrumental in building the Greenville County Republican Women’s club into the largest and most influential club of its kind in the state. She served as president of the club and later president of the South Carolina Federation of Republican Women. She currently serves as a vice president of the National Federation of Republican Women, a post no South Carolinian has held for more than three decades. She was elected to a second term as Chairman of the Greenville County Republican Party by Delegates to the County Republican Convention earlier this year without opposition.

Mrs. Poe informed The Times Examiner that she intends to continue to support, remain active and  participate in local party activities and events.
