Andrew Mitchell, a home schooled student from northern Spartanburg County, will continue to play basketball with the Landrum High School Cardinals basketball team.
The SC High School League Athletics Appeals Panel voted 4 to 2 to overrule a decision by the league Executive Director prohibiting Mitchell from continuing to play with the Landrum team after his parents moved into the Chapman High School Transportation Zone.
Spartanburg County School District 1 has had school choice within the district for 40 years. There are no enforced attendance lines in the district, only transportation areas where buses serve specific schools.
Andrew Mitchell had played basketball with Landrum High last year. Spartanburg County District 1 Superintendent Dr. Ronald Garner supported Andrew Mitchell’s appeal. Dr. Oran Smith and the Palmetto Family Council also took an active role in supporting the appeal.
