Fixing SC’s bad roads, bridges could take longer than a decade

The S.C. Department of Transportation wants to fix the state’s bad roads and bridges over a 10-year period, but it might not hit that target at the rate projects are being completed, a review by The Nerve found.
From July 1, 2017, when the gas-tax-hike law took effect, through April of this year, DOT says it completed $47.5 million in projects, according to its most recently released records. That amount is just 4.7% of the $1 billion in road and bridge work statewide that DOT has identified, and the completed projects were done over 22 months, which represents 18 percent of the 10-year plan.

Widows Tax Repeal Gains Even More Support in Senate and House

MOAA joined other veteran services organizations this past week to continue the fight to repeal the “widows tax,” which deducts annuity benefits paid to surviving spouses as an offset to a VA benefit for survivors.
James Naughton, MOAA’s associate director for government relations, joined surviving spouses, four senators – Sens. Doug Jones (D-Ala.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Jon Tester (D-Mont.), and Jim Risch (R-Idaho) – and representatives from other military and veteran advocacy groups on Capitol Hill on Tuesday morning for a press conference where they urged passage of the Military Surviving Spouses Equity Act of 2019, which would repeal the offset. USDA Announces Support for Farmers Impacted by Unjustified Retaliation and Trade Disruption

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue today announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will take several actions to assist farmers in response to trade damage from unjustified retaliation and trade disruption. President Trump directed Secretary Perdue to craft a relief strategy to support American agricultural producers while the Administration continues to work on free, fair, and reciprocal trade deals to open more markets in the long run to help American farmers compete globally. Specifically, the President has authorized USDA to provide up to $16 billion in programs, which is in line with the estimated impacts of unjustified retaliatory tariffs on U.S. agricultural goods and other trade disruptions. These programs will assist agricultural producers while President Trump works to address long-standing market access barriers.
