Governor vetoes ‘data warehouse’ plan, budget earmarks after Nerve coverage
- By Rick Brundrett - The Nerve
In a veto message released Friday, Gov. Henry McMaster rejected a state budget proviso authorizing the creation of a massive “data warehouse” containing sensitive information on South Carolinians – several days after The Nerve raised privacy concerns about the controversial plan.
McMaster also vetoed parts of another budget proviso directing a collective $750,000 to two nonprofits favored by three House members, one of whom sits on the board of trustees of one of the organizations. The Nerve first revealed the earmarks – funding requests by House members for specific projects or programs that didn’t originate with the state agency that would receive the public dollars – in a March story.
South African Genocide Watch
- By Mike Scruggs
Why have you not heard this?
Genocide Watch in an international human rights organization especially concerned with genocide. It rates various countries with strong ethnic or religious conflicts according to ten stages of genocide. In the last few years, it has rated South Africa as being on the border of Polarization and Preparation, currently steps 6 and 7. Step 8 is Persecution and Step 9 is Genocide. Step 10 is Denial of Genocide, an almost certain indication of further genocidal acts to come. South Africa’s 55 million population is just over 80 percent black, and the endangered group is the white minority of approximately 8.4 percent of the current population. Before World War I, whites made up 22 of the population, but it had dropped to 11 percent by 1994, following the end of Apartheid and white political rule.

Sez Who?
- By Raquelle Sheen
Teachers, child psychologists and parenting “experts” have told us for decades how children ought to be raised and educated. Although their advice has varied through the years, most people are happy to accept whatever happens to be the current prevailing wisdom. It is so much easier to just trust an expert. Parenting can be challenging, confusing, and even frightening. Self-doubt, second-guessing, and fear of failure are feelings every parent is familiar with. Advice from experts feels like an anchor in the storm or a GPS in an unfamiliar city.
The Confederate Battle Flag
- By Mike Scruggs
The Battle for Historical Truth vs. Politically Correct Hysteria
The Confederate Battle Flag, sometimes called the Southern Cross, is held in disfavor by many who are unfamiliar with its origin and true symbolism. Many have been taught to treat it as an object of moral horror and political infamy. A deadly combination of ignorance and arrogant self-righteousness is constantly engaged in shouting down its true history and meaning. Demagogues freely defame it, while moral cowardice acquiesces to their outrageous distortions of the truth. The apathetic allow its true history to be buried under decades of slanderous propaganda. It is incumbent upon those who value truth, fairness, good will, reasonable tolerance, and charity in society to educate themselves on the true history and meaning of this famed banner.
The Never-Trumpers Are Never Coming Back
- By Pat Buchanan
With never-Trump conservatives bailing on the GOP and crying out for the Party of Pelosi to save us, some painful truths need to be restated.
The Republican Party of Bush I and II, of Bob Dole and John McCain, is history. It's not coming back. Unlike the Bourbons after the Revolution and the Terror, after Napoleon and the Empire, no restoration is in the cards.
It is over. The GOP's policies of recent decades -- the New World Order of George H.W. Bush, the crusades for democracy of Bush II -- failed, and are seen as having failed. With Trump's capture of the party they were repudiated.

Stare Decisis
- By David Thompson
The political issue that will be front and center from now going forward will be a judicial one: stare decisis. Simply defined that means, using prior judicial decisions, and precedent, as the main legal support for a decision under consideration. Proponents of this well-established approach suggest that, barring any new shift in circumstances, we should let existing rulings stay in place…even if wrongly decided.
We will, for example, hear a great deal about Roe v. Wade in the coming months. The opening created on the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) by the retirement of Justice Kennedy opens a huge can of worms. The Democrats have already announced that all 25 people President Trump has started to consider for the appointment are, “not qualified.” Such is the ‘my mind is made up, don’t confuse me with facts’ approach of Senate Democrats under Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. If you wonder why Congress has a favorability rating in single digits, look no further than such obstinacy by Democrats.
The Democratic Party's Christian Problem
- By David Limbaugh
People on the left are outraged when you question their patriotism, their dedication to the nation as founded and their respect for the Constitution as originally written, but they continually vindicate our concerns.
The most recent example is the left's unhinged mania at Judge Amy Coney Barrett's inclusion on President Trump's list of potential Supreme Court appointees. In times of perceived crisis -- and this is certainly one of those times for leftists -- they show their colors, and you can color them militantly opposed to Barrett, in large part because of her Catholicism. And guess what else. Rumor is that she frequents a Bible study, as well.
How S.C. Lawmakers Might Have Access to Your Private Information
- By Rick Brundrett - The Nerve
For 10 years, a proviso tucked away in the state budget has given lawmakers and multiple S.C. agencies access to a massive “data warehouse” containing personal medical records of many South Carolinians.
Now, lawmakers want to launch a similar database that would track sensitive education and workforce information on children and adults in the Palmetto State. The system would be created under another budget proviso passed last week by legislators and now under review by the governor.
The proposed “data warehouse” could be as large as the existing health care version – created in 2002 through a budget proviso and renewed annually via a proviso. Both systems could, in theory, pull private records from each other, effectively creating an even larger, state-run electronic bank of personal information.
Trump Can Surpass Reagan with His Pick
- By John & Andy Schlafly
President Trump has a golden opportunity to surpass Reagan on the all-important issue of the Supreme Court. With a good pick to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, Trump can achieve what Reagan could not.
As good as Reagan was, two out of his three Supreme Court Justices were disappointments. Reagan’s first selection was his worst, and Trump’s advisors should take care not to allow history to repeat that mistake.
Reagan chose Sandra Day O’Connor after she was inadequately vetted as to her liberal positions on abortion, the Establishment Clause, and feminism. Reagan erred by picking her because she was the first he interviewed for the job, without Reagan bothering to interview the other candidates.
Jahi's Life Mattered
- By Michelle Malkin
Amid all the raging political headlines and hyperventilating tweets of the Summer of Resistance, a searing ember of news stopped me in my tracks this week.
Jahi McMath has passed away.
I never had a chance to meet the young California teen, but her fight for life gripped me three years ago and was never far from my mind or heart -- especially as my own daughter, the same age as Jahi, battled her own health crisis.
Do you remember Jahi? Medical experts declared her "brain dead" after a routine tonsillectomy gone wrong. Children's Hospital Oakland pushed to have all life-sustaining medical treatment terminated; the professionals predicted quick deterioration. California declared Jahi legally "brain dead."
The Values Underlying Independence Day
- By Judge Andrew Napolitano
The Declaration of Independence -- which was signed on July 3, 1776, for public release on July 4 -- was Thomas Jefferson's masterpiece. Jefferson himself wrote much about the declaration in the 50 years that followed.
Not the least of what he wrote offered his view that the declaration and the values that it articulated were truly radical -- meaning they reflected 180-degree changes at the very core of societal attitudes in America. The idea that farmers and merchants and lawyers could secede from a kingdom and fight and win a war against the king's army was the end result of the multigenerational movement that was articulated in the declaration.

The Second Supreme Court Justice
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
President Trump is getting an opportunity to appoint a second justice to the Supreme Court. He has published a list of candidates who have a history of supporting the Constitution in their court decisions. His opponents that include most Democrats and many RINO Republicans are going to oppose the nominee no matter who it is or what his or her qualifications are. President Trump hopes to have the judge confirmed by the Senate prior to the November Election.
President Trump Announces Federal Government Reorganization Plan
- By Jeff West
President Trump signed the sweeping Executive Order 13781 on March 13, 2017, entitled “Comprehensive Plan for Reorganizing the Executive Branch.” The Director of the Office of Management and Budget was instructed to develop a plan “to reorganize governmental functions and eliminate unnecessary agencies.” Each agency head had to submit a reorganization plan by September 11, 2017 to increase efficiency and accountability.
Recently the resulting report "Delivering Government Solutions in the 21st Century" was posted on the White House website (https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Government-Reform-and-Reorg-Plan.pdf). The report says that some of its objectives can be achieved through executive action and some will require Congressional legislation. Priorities listed include:

Data warehouses threaten S.C. citizens’ privacy rights
- By Ashley Landess
The state of South Carolina has a lot of information about you and your family – including your children. That much you know, but new laws on the books – and in the works – push data collection to a level that not only threatens privacy rights but also opens the door for dangerous regulations based on personal information.
The Legislature has, in stages, created a sort of “information central,” passing laws that create two data warehouses to pull in information from agencies for health care and social services, education and workforce.
Israel's Beginnings
- By Dr. Al Snyder
Israel first became a nation around 1300 BC and a kingdom in 1020 BC. Though it was occupied on several occasions, the main population remained Jewish until the Roman conquest.
By 135 AD some 3 million Jews had been expelled from their homeland by the Romans. Nonetheless, a continuous Jewish presence remained. This population fluctuated depending on the whim of imperial rulers. By the mid-19th century approximately only 20,000 Jews were living in Palestine under the rule of the Ottoman Turks.
Palestine was the name given by the Romans to the region that encompassed Israel, the West Bank, Jordan and parts of Syria and Lebanon. Palestine was never an independent nation, never a country with borders.

The Liberal Stampede to 'Abolish ICE'
- By Pat Buchanan
"No Borders! No Nations! No Deportations!" "Abolish ICE!"
Before last week, these were the mindless slogans of an infantile left, seen on signs at rallies to abolish ICE, the agency that arrests and deports criminal aliens who have no right to be in our country.
By last week, however, "Abolish ICE!" was no longer the exclusive slogan of the unhinged left. National Democrats were signing on.
Before his defeat in New York's 14th Congressional District, Joe Crowley, fourth-ranked Democrat in the House, called ICE a "fascist" organization.
Edu-Vacation
- By Laura Belknap
Summer is a great time to fit in an extra-special field trip. Many families take off time from school, but that doesn’t mean that kids have to stop learning. The South Carolina Upstate is within a reasonable drive of mountains, lakes, beaches, museums, and even a few zoos, so the options for day trips are outstanding. For those who enjoy longer trips and overnight stays away from home, the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter in northern Kentucky are excellent choices to expand students’ understanding of how well the Bible fits into science and history.
NGU Announces Agape English Language Institute Partnership
- By Press Release
Tigerville, SC – North Greenville University, recognized as one of the most notable conservative Christian universities in the Southeast, has entered into a conditional admissions agreement with AGAPE English Language Institute (Agape). The agreement’s purpose is to streamline the admissions process into programs at NGU.
Agape is an international institute providing English language education to international students. It will provide applicant referrals who are suitable and qualified candidates to attend NGU’s traditional undergraduate and onsite graduate programs offered at NGU’s Tim Brashier Campus. International students must be resident students, so this agreement does not apply to the online degree programs unless the Agape student returns to their home country and completes the degree online.
College Destruction of Black Students
- By Walter Williams
Amy Wax, a University of Pennsylvania law professor, has come under attack and scathing criticism because she dared criticize the school's racial preferences program. In an interview with Brown University economist Glenn Loury, discussing affirmative action, Wax mentioned how racial preferences hinder the ability of blacks to succeed academically by admitting them into schools at which they are in over their heads academically. At Penn's seventh-ranked law school, Wax said, she doesn't think that she has ever seen a black law student graduate in the top quarter of his class, and "rarely" is a black student in the top half.
