Hyphenated Americans Are Not Americans At All! Right? Right??
- By W.H. Lamb
“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Luke 16:13.
Back in the “ancient times,” in February of 2001, I wrote an article for the print version of The Times Examiner titled: “The Growing Curse of Hyphenated Americans.” I felt strongly about this problem of “divided loyalty” among Americans then, and I haven’t changed my opinion one bit since. If anything, I’m more disturbed over the “curse” of hyphenated Americans today than I was then, when it was an irritating problem, rather than the impending catastrophe it has become.
Something Deeper
- By Ben Graydon
Shallow is sometimes defined as a mile wide and an inch deep. Most of life, quite frankly, is shallow that way. But there’s no place for shallow in the Kingdom of God – in its earthly manifestation, the ecclesia. So we’re drilling down on church.
What is the church and how does it differ from what Jesus set up in scripture (the ecclesia)? Yes, there is a difference. Go back and read the articles that preceded this one. But we’re not stopping there. This is not a mission to destroy but to resuscitate. Some call for revival, others for reformation, but let’s go for a revolution – a complete turning around, 360 degrees, back go what Jesus set up 2000 years ago. And when we encounter conflict with what currently exists, let’s let scripture rule. That’s Ground Rule # 1.
It's Our Constitution -- Not Kavanaugh
- By Walter Williams
One of the best statements of how the Framers saw the role of the federal government is found in Federalist Paper 45, written by James Madison, who is known as the "Father of the Constitution": "The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite. The former will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and foreign commerce. ... The powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people." Today's reality is the polar opposite of that vision. The powers of the federal government are numerous and indefinite, and those of state governments are few and defined.
Clemson / An Open Letter & Open Reply / Poppycock
- By H.K. Edgerton
Approximately 16 years ago, on the Historic March Across Dixie, alongside many of our Southern family, my brothers and I don in the uniform of the Southern soldier with the Southern Cross in hand, we would make our way thru the Clemson University community; only to be stopped by a member of the Clemson City police and told that we needed a $300,000 insurance policy before we could continue the March to Austin, Texas.
Several hours later after the finagling of the Honorable Attorney Kirk D. Lyons, alongside a very nice policeman, two of us were allowed to cross the bridge into Seneca, South Carolina to begin the journey anew with the others who waited. I would return 5 years later and make the journey again with no problem.
S.C. Agencies Sitting on Nearly $500M in Taxpayer Funds
- By Rick Brundrett - The Nerve
As S.C. lawmakers plan to push a massive borrowing bill next year, they likely won’t publicly talk about the fat reserves that some state agencies have accumulated – including their own chambers.
State agencies collectively carried over about $484.5 million in general funds into the fiscal year that started July 1, according to S.C. Comptroller General Richard Eckstrom’s year-end report on the 2017-18 fiscal year.
That is roughly the amount of a taxpayer-backed bond bill that died in the Legislature last year, about half of which was designated for higher education projects. Lawmakers reportedly next year plan to introduce another bill to borrow hundreds of millions of dollars – which would fall on taxpayers to repay – for repairs at colleges and universities and other state-owned buildings.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Governor Henry McMaster on Sept. 6, 2018 hosted the 2018 Governor’s Opioid Summit, which included roundtable discussions and exhibits from healthcare professionals, state and local agencies, members of the South Carolina law enforcement community, and other experts and stakeholders. The event provided an opportunity for community leaders to collaborate on how to combat the opioid epidemic head on and how continue to improve the services South Carolina provides those suffering from opioid use disorder.

Civic Sundays

Is everyone in your church registered to vote? The truth might shock you!
Research shows that there are millions of conservatives sitting in churches all across America who aren't registered to vote. Even worse, there are millions more who are registered but just don't vote.
Millions of them have moved, have old addresses and need to have their voter registration updated in order to be able to vote this November.
President Donald Reagan?
- By David Brody
"Some critics see the President as being simple-minded. Rather, a number of his aides suggest, he is simplistic. That is, he reduces complications to simple symbols and images of good and bad, American and un-American. That allows him to cut through the complexities that bewilder and hold no interest for the general public, putting him squarely on the public's wavelength.”
When you read the words above, it sounds like an all too recognizable criticism of President Trump. But actually, The New York Times Magazine wrote those words back in 1985 about President Ronald Reagan. I’m not suggesting Donald Trump is Ronald Reagan or vice versa. But what’s perfectly clear is that both men have been described in very similar terms when it comes to how they see the world, how they tackle the tasks of being president and how they are viewed from an intellectual perspective. Hence, I give you: President Donald Reagan.

E&C Presses Twitter CEO on Algorithms, Content Moderation
- By US House Energy and Commerce Committee
The Energy and Commerce Committee, chaired by Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR), held a hearing on September 5, 2018 with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to examine the company’s algorithms and content moderation process.
“We have a lot of questions about Twitter’s business practices including questions about your algorithms, content management practices, and how Section 230 Safe Harbor protects Twitter. In many ways, for some of us, it seems a little bit like the Wizard of Oz, and we want to know what’s going on behind the curtain. This summer, reports surfaced that profiles of prominent Republican Twitter users were not appearing in automatically populated dropdown search results, I think you mentioned that in your own testimony. This was after a member of this committee had her tweets and ads taken off the service because of a basic conservative message, and there are other examples that have been sent our way,” Chairman Walden said.
Shallow
- By Ben Graydon
God resides in a building made with hands. We call that place the “house of God.” There is one day of the week that He is more present there , and that is when we are supposed to go meet with Him.
We follow pagan practices that we insist are scriptural because they are called by terms that appear in our favorite versions of the Bible, never taking the time to do deeper studies of the original text in the original languages or the full context of the passage in question or the actual historical record to come to understand just what was intended by the writers of scripture and what historically changed that intent, and for what purpose.

Congress is Funding Planned Parenthood and Not Funding the Wall
- By Tabitha Walter - Eagle Forum
The House came back into session this week after a long five-week break. The first thing on their agenda is to fund the government before the September 30 deadline. Since they have already passed 7 of the 12 bills needed to do so, and the Senate has passed 9 of the 12 bills, you would think that this would be a task they could accomplish. However, House leadership has decided to punt their responsibilities until after the November elections.
Regime Change -- American Style
- By Pat Buchanan
The campaign to overturn the 2016 election and bring down President Trump shifted into high gear this week.
Inspiration came Saturday morning from the altar of the National Cathedral where our establishment came to pay homage to John McCain.
Gathered there were all the presidents from 1993 to 2017, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama, Vice Presidents Al Gore and Dick Cheney, Secretaries of State Hillary Clinton, John Kerry and Henry Kissinger, the leaders of both houses of Congress, and too many generals and admirals to list.
Mr. Anonymous Exposes an Even Deeper State
- By David Limbaugh
If Democrats and resistance Republicans think they are going to depose President Trump or thwart his presidency by endlessly savaging him in the name of protecting the republic, they don't have any concept of the fierce resolve of his supporters.
The latest salvo in the resistance's efforts to nullify the will of the American electorate is an anonymous New York Times op-ed purportedly penned by a "senior official" in the Trump administration. This pretend super-patriot declares that Trump faces "a test to his presidency unlike any faced by a modern American leader. ... The dilemma -- which he does not fully grasp -- is that many of the senior officials in his own administration are working diligently from within to frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations. I would know. I am one of them."
The Beloved Senator John McCain – NOT!
- By John Utz - Greenville, SC
"The beloved Senator John McCain" ...So stated Neil Cavuto of the Deep State FoxNews on an early broadcast shortly after McCain's death. Cavuto also referred to (2nd) wife Cindy as a 'school teacher,' corrected soon thereafter to 'heiress' (of a Budweiser Arizona franchise!). Listeners, aware of the scandalous and unprincipled activities of McCain, persumably forced the correction.
Foundation for Moral Law Sends Memorandum to Schools on Prayer at Football Games
- By Christian Newswire
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Prayer at public school football games, including over the school loudspeaker, does not violate the Constitution if it is a student message and not the school's, according to the Foundation for Moral Law which last Friday sent a memorandum on the subject to all Alabama school superintendents.
The Memorandum on Student Religious Speech at Athletic Events countered letters sent by the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation ("FFRF") to several Alabama public schools claiming that prayer at school athletic events is unconstitutional and demanding that schools immediately stop the practice.
The Last Column
- By David Thompson
This will be my last column at the Greenville Times Examiner. It has been a privilege to be able to express myself in this publication for the last four and a half years. I want to thank Colonel Bob Dill for allowing me to be part of his enterprise. I also thank those who have helped in producing the paper over my time here, and those who read my columns…thank you. It was my hope to be always interesting, sometimes humorous, and to demonstrate Col. Dill and my shared devotion to the First Amendment…I trust that goal was achieved.
California versus Trump on Phony Net Neutrality
- By John & Andy Schlafly
As part of its never-ending resistance to the Trump agenda, the California legislature has just passed a bill to reinstate the discredited concept of “net neutrality” for access to the internet. A bill described as the nation’s strongest form of net neutrality awaits the signature of lame duck Governor Jerry Brown.
Net neutrality is as phony as “free trade,” in that both are wonderful only for those getting the better end of the deal. Google, Facebook, and other California companies have been getting a free ride on net neutrality because it enables them to avoid paying their enormous share of internet traffic.

We are tremendously grateful to Mr. Low for listening to faith leaders throughout the state and pulling the bill.
Expanded and Improved Medicare for All: Beware of Greeks Bearing Broccoli
- By Marilyn M. Singleton
During the Supreme Court oral arguments in the challenge to the Affordable Care Act’s mandate to purchase health insurance, people laughed when the late Justice Scalia asked whether the government could make you buy broccoli. Never happen? The laughable has become reality. A California bill awaiting the governor’s signature forbids restaurants from serving any beverage other than water or unflavored milk with kiddie meals. As of yet, the meal’s purchasers, unlike the restaurant, won’t be fined for ordering another beverage for their child.
Exceptional People I Have Known
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
As I watched portions of the five-day funeral of Senator John McCain, it reminded me of the exceptional characters I have known. One Army officer would make McCain look like an amateur prankster. He was a US Military Academy Graduate and a Lieutenant Colonel when I served in his organization in Bremerhaven, Germany in 1957-58.
Ltd. Fred Smaltz was a combat veteran who participated in the Normandy Invasion of WW II. Smaltz was a striking figure, well over 6- feet tall, shaved head and an unruly mustache. His wife Gail was a tall, red headed nurse.
Yes – There Are Fascists Living Among Us!
- By W.H. Lamb
We’ve all heard the word, “fascist,” quite a lot lately. Every so-called “main stream media” outlet is proclaiming that fascists are evil racists (they are both), noxious “right wing extremists” (nope) who are in league with President Trump (not true) and his “bad, bad, bad” conservative/populist allies in the ranks of “The Basket of Deplorables,” as Comrade Hillary Clinton labeled them. (A few months ago, no less an authority than Rush Limbaugh said that Hillary was a COMMUNIST, so I’m just using her appropriate title).

Escape Room Escapade
- By Washington Center
A darkened room. Sputtering engines. An electronic voice repeating a warning message as the computer screen fractures into hundreds of tiny unidentifiable images. Although not part of the typical back-to-school experience, students in Ms. Benton’s class at Washington Center found themselves in such a position as they worked to solve puzzles during a Labor Day escape room activity.
