Gen. Alexander Haig: Dead at Age 85

The announced death of Alexander “Al” Haig brought back many memories of a man who spent six decades of his life in service to his country. Haig was born in a suburb of Philadelphia, Dec. 2, 1924. As a boy he dreamed of a military career, received an appointment to the US Military Academy and graduated from West Point with the class of 1947. He served in combat in both Korea and Vietnam. As an Army Colonel he became a military advisor to Henry Kissinger in the Nixon Administration. President Nixon promoted Haig from 2 to 4 star general, breaking tradition and passing over 240 more senior officers. He served as Chief of Staff for Nixon during the Watergate Hearings and became the Supreme Allied Commander of NATO forces under President Ford. He resigned from that position when President Carter created the Iranian disaster and was later appointed Secretary of State by President Reagan. He resigned due to bickering within the Reagan Cabinet. George Shultz, his successor at State described Haig as “a patriot’s patriot. No matter how you sliced him, it came out red, white and blue.”
Tap Water Disinfectant Chloramine?

Most people do not know that chloramine is the tap water disinfectant used in Greenville by Greenville Water System and in Greer by Greer Commission of Public Works. Chloramine is a combination of bleach and ammonia - two cleaners that you are told to never combine when cleaning.
My son and I have experienced burning, red, itchy skin rashes that no doctor could treat and digestive symptoms including nausea, horrible abdominal cramps, and irritable bowel symptoms. I figured out it was the water after going to chloramine.org which tells symptoms that others are having and shows example skin rashes before and after using chloraminated water. I learned that about 1,000 people in an organization called Citizens Concerned About Chloramine (CCAC) were able to prove cause and effect with chloramine. They are dramatically better after avoiding chloramine, but this takes a lot of work.

The Senate’s decisive defeat of confirmation of radical labor lawyer Craig Becker is the first tangible result of the Massachusetts Miracle, which made Scott Brown the 41st Republican in the U.S. Senate. Two red-state Democrats also voted not to proceed toward a vote on President Obama’s nomination of Becker to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).
Becker is a top lawyer for the Service Employees International Union, which spent $60 million to elect Obama. SEIU’s boss, Andy Stern, was the most frequent visitor to Obama’s White House last year.

“We shouldn’t complain when our high taxes go to support the homeless. The Bible says we should sacrifice to help others.”
All three of these statements have something in common. Do you know what it is?
All three have a faulty understanding of the meaning of sacrifice. The first sentence sounds pretty innocuous and I’ve often heard it said to toddlers. The second statement is a little more problematic and you may have heard parents of teenagers say this. The third statement shows the full picture of misunderstanding biblical sacrifice.
Chuck Wagon Gang

This week’s feature group is The Chuck Wagon Gang. As you recall, this group began in the 30’s and traveled all over the country and recorded for over 40 years with Columbia Records. They sold more than 37 million records, which many of the secular artists have not attained. They appeared in Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, Grand Ole Opry and the Grand Ole Gospel Reunion. They are Gospel Music Hall of Fame members and are included in the Smithsonian Institution’s classic American recordings. The group left the road after the death of Roy Carter in 1997.

The event gave the opportunity for Winn Freeman, Founder and CEO, to present them the facts about addiction; the epidemic destroying families and plaguing our community. The lunch was catered by Ann’s Cakes and Catering, along with a group of volunteers from Rock Springs Baptist Church who provided desserts to the crowd as they watched the DVD. It presented a dramatic depiction of firsthand accounts from former drug addicts; who went through transformation when they became students at Wisdom In Living Life Ministry.

Recently my wife Marlene and I attended the Eighth Annual Abbeville Scholar’s Conference at the Francis Marion Hotel in Charleston, South Carolina. The Abbeville Institute is the brain child of respected philosopher Donald Livingston of Emory University. The conference addressed current political and social issues, which have not been discussed in 144 years. The principles of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison of interposition and state nullification have again resurfaced as solutions to our current political crises emanating from an out-of-control corrupt Federal Government. These political abuses by the Federal Government are nothing new and frequently laws are passed which are in direct defiance of the U.S. Constitution.

State and Local Leaders Hold Joint News Conference

C-SPAN carried Sarah Palin’s address before the National Tea Party Convention in Nashville live to audiences around the world. The former Alaska Governor and Republican Vice Presidential candidate was given a rousing welcome by an audience of 1,100 in the Gaylord Opryland Hotel ballroom.
It was reported that as many as 120 media outlets from at least 8 nations covered the first event of its kind.
“I’m a big supporter of this movement and America is ready for another revolution,” Palin told about 600 well-mannered convention attendees and another 500 or more cheering fans added for the Palin appearance.
Guest-Worker Programs Hurt American Workers

There are many people who say that our only serious immigration problem is that there are 12 million immigrants in the country who are technically illegal. These people tend to believe that the only problem with 500,000 illegal immigrants per year is that they are, in liberal-speak, “undocumented.” They believe that everything would be fine if legal immigration were made easier and employers could have more legal guest-workers. The problem with this is that our legal immigration levels are also unprecedented. Legal immigration is now averaging about 1.0 million per year. Previous to 1987, it averaged only 300,000 per year, and the rate of illegal immigration was much lower. According to Harvard labor economist, George Borjas, himself a Cuban immigrant, a total immigration level of about 500,000 per year is the maximum that will not hurt native-born Americans and their families.

Three States, Three Minutes

Over the years as I have traveled to many states and driven thousands of miles, I have visited so many interesting sites that I have even seen fit to pay a second and even a third visit to some of them – places such as the battlefields of Shiloh and Spotsylvania Courthouse.
In the last several travel articles I have been recounting a trip I took this past August to southern Tennessee and southeastern Missouri. As I began heading back toward South Carolina I decided to revisit a few places that I first visited 12 years earlier, on a trip I took in 1997.
One of those places was the small town of Cairo (pronounced Kay-ro), Illinois, which is located at the southernmost tip of the long state of Illinois.
Not a Good Year for RINOs

The “handwriting is on the wall,” 2010 is not going to be a good year for RINOs. In case you have not been paying attention, RINO is a liberal, moderate or progressive politician that, in order to get elected in a conservative district or state, places an “R” after his or her name, runs in a Republican primary election, and becomes a “Republican in name only” (RINO).
The Republican Party in its effort to become a powerful force for good government was willing to compromise principles in order to gain majority control of the South Carolina State House and Senate and both houses of Congress in Washington, D. C. Republicans not only accepted Democrat office holders into their party, but encouraged change of party label in order to add numbers and become the majority party.

Judicial Watch, a “constitutionally conservative, nonpartisan educational foundation that promotes transparency, accountability and integrity in government politics and the law,” requested and received documents showing the cost of House speaker Nancy Pelosi’s travels by US Air Force Jet during the past two years.
Judicial Watch reported that the 2,000 pages of documentation they obtained under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act show Pelosi’s travel cost the U. S. Air Force $2,100,744.59 over a two year period. In-flight expenses including food and alcohol totaled $101,429.14.

During the 2008 presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton described herself as a “progressive.” About that time a member of Greenville County Council used the descriptive term. It implies the individual has a positive outlook and favors progress.
Opportunities, Dangers Ahead for GOP

The Republican Party has the greatest opportunity in a decade to change national, state and local government for the better this year. However, there are perilous obstacles along the way that could derail the opportunity and become disastrous for both the party and the nation. An objective look at recent history is beneficial to understand the current situation and plot a way forward.
A large influx of social and fiscal conservatives became involved in the political process during the 1980s through organizations such as the Moral Majority and Christian Coalition. The “Rockefeller” style, country club, establishment republicans distrusted these energetic newcomers, but eventually found a way to harness their energy and build a powerful political movement that eventually controlled the White House and both houses of Congress.

Voter ID Bill another High Priority for Lawmakers
The South Carolina State Senate finally passed a sovereignty resolution that had been held over from last year.
With Tea Party and Taxpayer activists looking over their shoulders, Senators passed the resolution in the second week of their business that will formally remind all branches of the federal government that their powers are limited by the United States Constitution.
It further reminds the federal government that it has no authority to demand purchase of healthcare insurance by the citizens of South Carolina.
