Criminalizing the Right? Military Labels Founding Fathers “Extremist”
- By The New American - 9-23-13
Defense Department documents, obtained by Judicial Watch through a Freedom of Information Act request, purporting to train U.S. soldiers and sailors label the Founding Fathers of the United States as “extremists” and claim that “participation in extremism is inconsistent with the duties of military service.”
The documents, compiled from a January 2013 lecture on “Extremism” by the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute, claim:
In U.S. history, there are many examples of extremist ideologies and movements. The colonists who sought to free themselves from British rule and the Confederate states who sought to secede from the Northern states are just two examples.

Eleventh Honor Flight Takes WWII Vets to Visit Washington Memorials
- By Paul Howell
On Thursday, Sep. 12, 2013, a group of 85 WWII veterans departed from Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport to Washington, D.C., on the eleventh Honor Flight from Upstate South Carolina. The group, accompanied by one hundred guardians, doctors, nurses, support staff, and media visited the World War II, Vietnam, Korean and Marine Corps War Memorials. This flight marked the 300th nationwide for US Airways, the original charter for Honor Flight. Additional highlights for this trip included the largest number of African American veterans and female veterans that HFU has taken to date on any single flight; a guardian who was held captive in Vietnam, and suffered the POW camp as one of the longest-held captives; a WWII veteran who is a retired General and served as a pilot; and multiple stories from each of the honorees that we hope will be told in the weeks ahead to family, friends and congregations.

Spirit of ‘45 Upstate Held Sunday at Reedy River Baptist Church
- By Lamar McCarrell
On Sunday, August 11, a large number of upstate residents gathered at the Reedy River Baptist Church in Travelers Rest, SC, to honor the World War II generation. A myriad of citizen groups joined together to give tribute to the Greatest Generation who won World War II and rebuilt the Western World. This generation played an important role in assuring the freedoms we all enjoy today.
Spirit of ’45, authorized by the U.S. Congress in 2010, is an annual event on the 2nd Sunday of every August. Travelers Rest began annual celebrations in 2011 and, just this year, Senator Mike Fair read a proclamation from Governor Nikki Haley making Spirit of ’45 a state-wide commemoration of World War II which ended on August 14, 1945.
