T.P. Wood Store Becomes NGU “Tigerville General Store”

The T. P. Wood Store, a historic landmark for a century is now part of North Greenville University and next month is scheduled to reopen as Tigerville General Store.
The ancient country store once housed the Tigerville Post Office, and the Tyger Masonic Lodge. The property was in the Wood Family until it became property of the university recently. Several decades ago it was the scene of a horrific crime when bandits murdered the postmistress in the post office part of the building.
As late as the 1970s and 1980s The Wood store was a gathering place for residents of the community who got together to relive memories of days gone bye. During the winter men of the community gathered around the “pot-belly stove” in the retail area. On cool summer evenings a bench out front was a favorite gathering place. Sometimes there would even be a game of checkers.

Five GCS Seniors Graduate with 12 Years of Perfect Attendance

Five seniors have completed 12 years of school without missing a single day. Students are allowed by State law to miss up to 10 days of school per year, but these Greenville County Schools seniors completed 2,160 days without missing a day, either excused or unexcused. Seniors with 12 years of perfect school attendance are recognized by the South Carolina Department of Education. They each received a special certificate and congratulatory letter from State Superintendent of Education Molly M. Spearman.

Burdick Awarded Scholarship By NGU

$14,000 Scholarship Awarded After Scholarship Competition
Tigerville, SC – Sloan Burdick, a senior at Powdersville High School, has been awarded the Trustee Scholarship by North Greenville University. She was chosen to receive the scholarship on the basis of her academic achievement, school, church, and community involvement.
She interviewed and competed for the Trustee Scholarship during Scholarship Interview Day at North Greenville University on February 12, 2015.

Harris Addresses 'Elite' NGU Grads

Tigerville, SC – North Greenville University held its spring commencement ceremony in perfect weather in Melvin and Dollie Younts Football Stadium on Thursday, May 7.
Over 4,000 spectators watched approximately 300 undergraduates and graduates receive their diplomas. Interim Executive Director for the South Carolina Baptist Convention Dr. Richard Harris was the keynote speaker.
“You graduates are a very elite group. This is a big deal,” said Harris. “You are graduating from North Greenville University, one of the finest Christian universities in America.”
“In the world’s population, only 6.7% have a university degree of any kind. In America, only 19% have bachelor’s degrees, 8% have master’s degrees, and only 2% have doctorate degrees,” said Harris.
Harris referenced Hebrews 12, which commands us to strip off everything that hinders us from fixing our eyes upon Jesus.

BJU Holds 88th Commencement

More than 700 students were awarded degrees at the 88th annual commencement of Bob
Jones University Fri., May 8.
The two-hour program was held in the Founder’s Memorial Amphitorium.
During the ceremony, BJU conferred 531 bachelor’s degrees, 129 master’s degrees and 50 associate degrees.

Pannell Named NGU Interim President

Tigerville, SC – North Greenville University Board of Trustees voted today to name Dr. Randall Pannell as interim president of the school effective immediately.
The decision is in response to NGU President Dr. Jimmy Epting’s announcement of his sabbatical and retirement effective June 1, 2015.
Pannell came to the institution in 2011 when he was hired as vice president for academics.
"We want to continue offering quality education as well as protect the culture here during this interim period,” said Bill Tyler, member of the interim leadership search committee. “We feel we can accomplish this with Dr. Pannell.”
