South Carolina Must Strengthen Procurement Laws
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
It is a well-known fact that South Carolina has some of the weakest procurement laws in the nation. Our state is used in academic case studies of waste and fraud through loose procurement laws. These laws must be strengthened if the Palmetto State is to get a handle on spending through waste and opportunities for fraud at all levels of government.

The Battle to Preserve Property Rights
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
The preservation of property rights will be one of the major issues facing Americans, South Carolinians and county governments in 2011. The battle lines are already drawn. The forces endangering the rights of citizens to buy, sell, own and do as they please with private property are organized, well funded and have a number of unconstitutional laws and government funding sources on their side. Tragically, property owners are not organized and many are not well-informed and lack the truth that can set them free from the assault on their constitutional rights.

In the first installment of this new travel series I told you about the first leg of my trip to Chattanooga. We got as far as the Nantahala Outdoor Center on US 74, which is several miles south of Bryson City.
I continued south along 74 towards my next destination, the town of Murphy. A few miles past the Outdoor Center the two-lane highway ceased to hug the Nantahala River and began to straighten out into gently rolling country.

James D. Vaughn
- By Keith Crowe
It seems only fitting that since this year marks the 100th anniversary of Southern Gospel Music that I feature the founder of Southern Gospel Music who was James D. Vaughn. America had been torn asunder by the Civil War. Atlanta lay in smoldering ruins and General Sherman and 60,000 Union troops were approaching Savannah, cutting a fifty-mile-wide swath through the Georgia countryside from Atlanta to the sea. The entire South was devastated by the war. On the evening of December 14, 1864, with Sherman only a week out of Savannah, a baby boy was born to George Washington and Eliza Vaughn in Giles County, Tennessee. The boy’s parents named him James David Vaughn. His life spanned 77 years, ending February 9, 1941, ten months before Pearl Harbor. What happened to James D. Vaughn between the burning of Atlanta and the bombing of Pearl Harbor was significant in the annals of American music. He helped develop and popularize a new folk form of American music known today as Southern Gospel Music.
S.C. Election Results in Perspective
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
Voters in South Carolina gave huge victories to Republican candidates in the November 2, 2010, General Election. What does this mean for the future of our state?
South Carolina is sending four new conservative Republican Congressmen to Washington. They will be part of an historic freshman class that will make waves on Capitol Hill. Sen. Jim DeMint was reelected and is becoming a leader of the conservative wing of the GOP in the Senate. Sen. Lindsey Graham has four more years to serve in his current term and, as predicted by this column months ago, could be picked by President Obama to be Secretary of Defense early next year. The appointment would provide the president with a public gesture of “bipartisanship” and create a GOP scapegoat for declaring victory and pulling out of Afghanistan before the 2012 Presidential Election. Graham is well-qualified for the job.

In fact, he was first endorsed and introduced to The Times Examiner before he entered the congressional primary race by the National Commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Teachers, Preachers and Greens … The Unholy Alliance to Transform America – Part 1 of 2
- By Tom DeWeese
When Communism “fell” in the late 1980’s, those who were busy scheming to impose global governance on the sovereign nations had a problem. Suddenly, the only super power in the world was the United States – the only nation on Earth based on the ideals of limited government, individual liberty and free enterprise. If American bedrock ideals of freedom took hold in the emerging nations of the old Soviet Empire, global governance was impossible.
What to do? The answer was obvious. Change America. Get her to join the community of nations with a proper attitude. Force her to learn her proper place. Target: America’s attitudes, values and beliefs. And to force us to quickly question those American ideals, elements of guilt and fear would be essential.

Judge John Few ruled on February 10, 2010, that Greenville County Council illegally delegated legislative authority to its individual Council members so they could make independent expenditures from a Council appropriated annual Council district expense fund.
The complaint filed by The South Carolina Public Interest Foundation and Edward D. Sloan, Jr., cited a South Carolina Attorney General opinion dated November 13, 2003, stating that a County Council’s delegation of legislative power to an individual member was unlawful.
Kenny Gates
- By Keith Crowe
This week’s article takes a somewhat different direction that most weeks. My wife, Charlene, and I had the honor of attending a birthday party for Kenny Gates on Saturday of last week. Kenny turned 80 on November 3rd. Of course, if you have been reading my articles and know anything about Southern Gospel Music you have heard of Kenny. He was the piano player for the famed Blue Ridge Quartet for many years beginning in 1949. There were many stories told about Kenny and his experiences on the road. I certainly do not have space to begin to recount these stories but there is a part of his birthday party that I think bears telling, so here goes.
Will Wilkins be Good for Haley?
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
Governor-elect Nikki Haley announced Monday that former U.S. Ambassador and State House Speaker David Wilkins will be chief of her transition team. To some, this announcement appears to be a contradiction with Haley promises to take on the entrenched system in the legislature. To others, Haley has made a brilliant move and has the ultimate legislative insider on her team and members of the legislature poised to do whatever David tells them to do.

Nikki Haley will be the first woman governor of South Carolina as the winner of one of the most vicious elections in the Palmetto State’s history. The daughter of immigrants was the target of personal attacks that could not be proven true or false. Voters were led to believe that legally requested extensions in filing tax returns was somehow a failure to pay taxes, although it is routinely used by business and personal taxpayers each year.

“That’s just not Christianity and I’m really surprised by the depth of the commitment to Yoga found on the part of many who identify as Christian,” Mohler said in responding to a media inquiry after publishing an article on the subject.
