Former President of Taxpayers Association Continues to Warn Elected Officials of the “Enemy Within”
He looked tired but moved quickly to the podium carrying an armfull of materials to be passed out to lawmakers. Speaking rapidly, and displaying the energy of a man half his age, he made it clear to the Greenville County Legislative Delegation that he has stepped down and passed the leadership of the County Taxpayers Association to someone else, but he was not going away.
As long as he has a breath in his body, he is not going to allow them to forget their oath of office to protect and defend the Constitution and their obligation to safeguard the freedom of the people they are paid to represent in the state government.
Common Core Tests to Cost S.C. Taxpayers Millions
- By Rick Brundrett from "The Nerve"
Belonging to the 22-state consortium that is developing the Common Core math and English language arts assessment tests for K-12 students will soon no longer be a cheap date for S.C. taxpayers.
Contacted last week by The Nerve, Jacqueline King, director of “higher education collaboration” for the “Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium,” based in Washington state, said after a four-year $175 million federal grant that supports the consortium ends in September, member states, including South Carolina, will have to pay membership fees to continue in the group.
Promote Justice by Electing Judges
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
There is mounting evidence that South Carolina’s legal system falls short of being a legitimate system of justice. The South Carolina Legislature just voted to give South Carolina Supreme Court Chief Justice Jean Toal another ten-year term in that powerful position. Justice Costa Pleicones, a judge who sits on her court, challenged Toal. Chief Justice Toal has not been a model citizen during her tenure as South Carolina’s C Chief Judge. She allegedly has had at least three traffic violations, including drunk driving, speeding and leaving the scene of an accident.

Widow of Late Lee Atwater Enters Race for Superintendent of Education
Sally Atwater, widow of the late political consultant and former RNC Chairman Lee Atwater, has entered the race for South Carolina Superintendent of Education.
Sheri Few, the leading conservative in the race immediately challenged Atwater and asked why she won’t reveal her position on Common Core.
Speaking from the 25th Education Policy Conference in St. Louis where Common Core was the number one topic, Few welcomed Atwater to the race and asked why her campaign announcement highlighted her political consultants but not her view on “the number one issue facing education today.
Pro-Life Groups say “No” to Girl Scout Cookies
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
“Millions of Dollars Each Year … Go to Promote the Girl Scout’s Partnership with Planned Parenthood”
Several pro-life organizations are encouraging their members and supporters to “say no” when Girl Scouts come to the door with cookies. They give as a reason the financial support going to Planned Parenthood from the Scout organization and the propaganda influence the organization is having on young girls and their mothers. Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest abortion provider.
WND reported that the American Life League, the nation’s oldest Catholic pro-life education and advocacy group, urged people to avoid buying Girl Scout Cookies. “The Girl Scouts was once a trusted organization dedicated to character building in young girls and women. Now, GSUSA is abusing that trust,” said Judie Brown, president of ALL.
DOA Passes to Take Pressure off Sheheen
- By James Moore
The New Year brings with it change and this year in our legislative body we have seen some changes. There is always room for further improvement and Senators Ross Turner and Danny Verdin along with Representatives Garry Smith, Mark Willis, and Eric Bedingfield attended a Town Hall meeting hosted by Fountain Inn, SC, on Thursday, February 6 at the local History Museum to discuss those relevant topics.
Smith, who recently received a pen from Governor Nikki Haley that she used to sign a document to the passed Department of Administration Bill, began the town hall discussion on the topic. For his efforts in seeing the legislation through, Smith was awarded an honorary pen from the Governor as a token of gratitude for his actions.
Greer Residents Want Tax Increase to Fix Roads
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
About 80 people Attended Greenville County Citizen Roads Advisory Commission Meeting at Greer City Hall
When Lisa Stevens asked for a show of hands of those who would favor a tax increase to repair roads, about 90 percent of those in attendance at the Greer meeting of the Greenville County Citizen Road Advisory Commission raised their hands. Stevens is chairman of the commission. Of course, those present and voting were mostly people that had a special interest in road and sidewalk construction and repairs because of a pet project or perceived urgent need in their neighborhood or a project that would be beneficial to their business.
The first speaker represented Ashmore Brothers Construction Co., a paving contractor. He presented the commission with a list of needed road projects. Another speaker, who was a developer and builder had a list of intersections and sidewalks that needed improvements.
None so Blind as Those who are Deceived
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
C-Span televised a recorded portion of the recent South Carolina Tea Party convention last Saturday night. I was surprised that they had speakers on both sides of the illegal alien issue. One of the several speakers with a heavy Hispanic accent was an American born in Cuba and imprisoned by the Castro regime. He had a startling warning for complacent Americans based on his first hand experiences in Cuba and what he is observing currently in this country. The first big deception was that the American people fell for the lie that Communism was dead and finished when the Soviet Union collapsed.
I believe that those who believe a lie or lies for a long period of time reach a point where they cannot distinguish fact from fiction. Many Americans are proving that point.
SCGOP Chairman Brings Olive Branch to Greenville

Healing Will not be Instant, Since Many of Those Present Experienced Rude Treatment of Greenville Delegation at State Convention of Which the Current Chairman Matt Moore Was a Part
South Carolina Republican Party Chairman Matt Moore attended the Greenville County Executive Committee meeting Monday night carrying a symbolic olive branch in an attempt to mend fences and heal wounds inflicted on delegates from Greenville by state party officials during last year’s State Convention.
County Chairman Chad Groover introduced Moore as someone who “will be a good friend to Greenville, an we will be able to work together in the future for Republican candidates and Republican causes.”
Frank Tooley, Korean Prisoner of War - Part 2
- By James Moore
Frank Tooley, a young man who was on the verge of turning 20 years old was stuck in the middle of a warzone looking down the barrel of a gun of his enemies. With artillery and bullets zipping overhead Tooley and two other soldiers were questioned about where the rest of the men were. There was a sense of calm that Tooley really couldn’t understand. He never thought that when he was in combat he wouldn’t be scared. He often wonders if the government put something in the food that would allow soldiers to not mentally tear down and be overcome with fear.
That day, on the mountain, all of the men in his company were either captured or killed except one man. After all of the men were captured the marching started. During the day time they would hide and at night they would march.

School Choice Unites and Empowers
- By Ellen Weaver
Liberal Democrat Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and conservative Republican Senator Ted Cruz. Newt Gingrich and Al Sharpton. What agenda could possibly unite these political odd couples?
Support for the rapidly expanding world of education options.
As we just celebrated during National School Choice Week, each of these leaders is part of a bi-partisan groundswell of advocates for evidence-based school choice programs, both public and private. Far more than “vouchers,” school choice in its truest form includes as many options as the needs of children are unique: high-quality traditional schools; public charters, magnet or virtual schools; open enrollment between traditional school districts; private school scholarship and tax credit programs; Education Savings Accounts; home schooling and more.
Local Drugstores to Lose Most TRICARE For Life (TFL) Prescriptions
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
Defense Authorization Act of 2013 Requires TRICARE for Life (TFL) Beneficiaries to use the Government Home Delivery (mail-order) Pharmacy System Effective February 14, 2014.
Mail order prescription refills are a requirement for military retirees and dependents effective February 14, 2014. Beginning on that date, individuals who are beneficiaries of TRICARE For Life (TFL) will no longer be permitted to order maintenance prescriptions from local drugstores by making a co-payment.
The mandate, which is a part of the 2013 Defense Authorization Act, applies to maintenance medications. Initial prescriptions can continue to be filled at a retail drug store, and beneficiaries will be allowed to fill up to two 30-day refills at a retail store during the transition period.
Bone Health
- By Dr. Joe Carrano
The textbooks tell us that the body needs vitamin D for calcium utilization, and vitamin A for both calcium and protein assimilation. Protein given as a powder lacks these fat-soluble co-factors that the body can use to build and maintain healthy bones.
Synthetic vitamin D, on the other hand, can cause hypercalcemia, a disturbance of calcium equilibrium leading to excessive blood calcium and calcification of soft tissues. Synthetic vitamin D added to commercial milk does not have the same beneficial effect as vitamin D3 from cod liver oil in preventing rickets and strengthening the bones.
Tax the Rich and Raise the Minimum Wage
- By Frank Hall - Greenville, SC
As I write this, several politicians are advocating that we raise the tax rate on the rich, so our government will have more money to pay our debts, and they want to raise the minimum wage to “help” the poorest of the poor. Several other politicians and many private citizens, including me, strongly believe both of these measures would be tragic mistakes. They ignore and run counter to the realities of street level economics. Let us look at a ridiculously simple hypothetical case to see what I am talking about:
Mr. John Doe owns a factory employing 200 workers that manufacture Supergismos at the rate of 1,000,000 per year which he sells for $10 each, generating a gross income of $10,000,000. His total production costs run $9 per unit. His net profit before taxes is $1,000,000. His present tax rate is 90%, so the government takes $900,000 and he gets to keep $100,000 per year, which he regards as a somewhat disappointing, barely adequate income for someone who works so hard and risks so much as he does.
Is Governor Haley REALLY Against Common Core Standards?
- By Johnnelle Raines - Upstate Regional Leader SCPIE
Last night I watched intently Governor Haley’s State of the State address…no mention of getting rid of Common Core Standards (CCS)! When asked recently at events she clearly will state she is against our present Common Core Standards. But no mention of that in her Education Plan or her State of the State address?
I am a huge fan of country singer Toby Keith. His song, “A Little Less Talk And A Lot More Action” comes to mind when I hear Governor Haley “say” she is against CCS. Last night would have been the perfect opportunity to make sure all the Legislators and citizens of SC know she is against these standards…but what did we hear from her on these child abusive standards? ... crickets…
The Age of Insanity
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
For American veterans who fought for freedom in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam and are still living, the current question burning in their heart and mind is: “What has happened to our country, and the people thousands fought, bled and died to defend?” It has happened gradually, but suddenly there is a realization that at least half of the people in our land are acting as if they were not of sound mind. They lack a desire to seek truth, defend their God-given freedom or have concern for future generations. Only an insane people would allow their freedom to be taken away and their exceptional way of life destroyed before their very eyes without taking some preventive action.
I find it difficult if not impossible to accept the fact that many well-meaning Americans, including thousands of professed Christians are so misinformed, misguided and deceived that they are willing to participate in the destruction of our Constitutional Republic.
Oklahoma Republican Dr. Tom Coburn Resigning from Senate
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
Senator Tom Coburn, the longest serving real fiscal conservative in the United States Senate, is resigning later this year, two years before his term ends.
Dr. Coburn, the OB/gyn who is a former Family Research Council (FRC) board member, has served Oklahoma in the Senate for ten years and in the House before that.
He is a former cancer survivor and the disease is now back. FRC released a statement saying, “Now that the disease is back, he felt it best to spend as much time with his family as possible. For conservatives, who’ve admired his tough-as-nails approach on spending (including his ‘Wastebooks’ his office is famous for), his voice will be missed. FRC will be praying for a speedy recovery for one of the Senate’s most reliable leaders. We continue to be grateful for all Tom has done in the cause of faith, family and freedom.”
The AGC Ensuring Quality Military Chaplains
- By James Moore
As America progresses into tomorrow there is a call for all lifestyles to be accepted. As lifestyles are to be accepted, Christian beliefs come under more scrutiny. For Chaplains working in a military that is becoming a melting pot of all that is America, pressure for them to not be offensive is increasing in strength.
Since the repeal of the ban on homosexuals in the military and the Supreme Court striking down the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, things have become more difficult for Christian Chaplains in the military. While their duties have become more difficult, nothing has change in regards to the law of religious freedoms.
The Associated Gospel Churches (AGC) is an organization which recruits and stands by Chaplains when they find themselves in situations of discrimination or pressures to conform.

Governor Pledges Millions More in Education Spending, Ignores Most Urgent Parental Concerns
In her State of the State address, Governor Nikki Haley ignored the despised and destructive federal Common Core Standards and school choice and instead pledged $160 million of new spending primarily on poor and under-performing districts and schools.
During a recent address to Republican Women in Greenville she pledged to oppose Common Core being implemented in the Palmetto State.
The Governor’s education plan divides the additional spending between 5 areas.
Frank Tooley, Korean Prisoner of War
- By James Moore
For a 19 year old barefoot cotton farm worker turned curb hopper from the farm country of Greenville County, the North Korean invasion of South Korea meant only one thing; a trip abroad was inevitable. Frank Tooley, who had already been drafted, knew that it was only a matter of time before Uncle Sam came and asked for his service in the American military intervention. Knowing that if he was drafted the Army would send him where he was needed, Tooley felt that it would be best if he joined on his own free will. Curious about whether he would pass the physical or not, Tooley joined his brother and some friends as they went to visit the doctor.

Serious Concerns Regarding Downgrade of Force Structure Prompts Congressional Action
South Carolina Republican Congressman Joe Wilson, a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, has announced that “serious concerns have been brought to light regarding proposed changes to Army force structure, especially the proposed Army Aviation restructuring plan.”
In order to attempt to head off a major national defense shortcoming, Wilson and a group of 16 bipartisan co-sponsors have introduced H. R. 3930, the National Commission on the Structure of the Army Act of 2014. The commission would recommend necessary force structures to meet future military force structure needs of the nation.
Scared Americans
- By Bob Dill, Publisher
Americans are scared. They are afraid of their government and they don’t know what to do. They have reason for fear, because the current regime in Washington, D.C., is abusing it’s power and using government agencies to openly reward its friends and punish its enemies.
A grass roots movement that spontaneously began in opposition to growth of government and taxes during the Bush Administration and had a role in electing a Republican majority in the US House of Representatives in 2010 was targeted by the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS, using intimidation during the 2012 Presidential Election, rendered many Tea Party organizations politically ineffective.

Harrell Still Won’t Release Campaign Expense Records
- By Rick Brundrett from "The Nerve"
From 2008 through 2012, S.C. House Speaker Bobby Harrell reimbursed himself more than $234,000 from his campaign account for legislative and other trips, campaign expenditure reports show.
The quarterly reports filed with the State Ethics Commission don't say whether Harrell, a licensed private pilot, flew his single-engine Cirrus SR22 to any of the events, though the records show that of the 40 travel-expense reimbursements to himself, nine were for at least $10,000 each and three were for more than $20,000 each, as The Nerve reported in October 2012.
Over the past year, however, Harrell’s campaign expenditure reports list no specific travel reimbursements to himself as he had done in previous years, The Nerve found Tuesday in a review of the expenditures. The Charleston Republican’s largest listed travel expenditure last year was $365 for a March trip to Myrtle Beach under the category of “legislative travel,” records show.
Robert E. Lee
- By Mike Scruggs
Measuring True Greatness
January 19 marked the 207th birthday of one of the most revered military leaders in American history. In fact, Robert E. Lee remains one of the most studied and respected military commanders in world history, although he was ultimately on the losing side.
The enormous importance that the mainstream media and political leaders today give to the Martin Luther King Holiday has worked to obscure the memory of Lee. Although there are many states that celebrate holidays for both King and Lee, most Southern politicians, following the politically correct fashion of the times, have shied away from honoring Lee. That is a great tragedy, for few men in American history have left such an exemplary record of Christian faith, noble character, and devotion to cause and duty.
